A Moi sup Paddleboarding lesson

StandUp Paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and is great for mind, body & soul. However, being on the water – whether inland or on the coast – comes with inherent risks, so please before you venture out:

  • First invest in a paddleboarding lesson from a recognised SUP School – key accredited providers are: BSUPA (British Stand Up Paddleboarding Association), ASI (Assoc Surfing Instructors), British Canoeing & WSA (Water Sports Academy).
  • When you attend your lesson, don’t be embarrassed to ask for:
    • Insurance certificate
    • Instructor name & qualification
    • Risk Assessment
    • Waterways Licence (if on rivers & canals)
  • ALSO:
    • Ensure that you have accurately completed & understood the Health Disclaimer Form
    • If you do not feel comfortable or adequately briefed with safety procedures – ask!

Top Considerations for Paddleboarding

  • Ensure you have the correct equipment – buoyancy aid (of 50N), board inflated to correct PSI, suitable paddle & height, leash with Quick Release Belt, wetsuit and clothing appropriate to conditions, waterproof phone case, waterproof deck bag.
  • Make sure that you can self-rescue (ie. get back on your board) in shallow waters first before paddling. Having a lesson will ensure that you are confident and competent in this essential skill.
  • Buddy-up’ with a fellow paddler or the very least, tell someone on land your proposed route.
  • Always carry a mobile phone on you in a waterproof case.
  • If you are paddling on UK inland waters, make sure you carry your Waterways Licence at all times (available from British Canoeing)
  • Make sure you are appropriately insured (3rd party liability)
  • If you are paddling on inland waters, especially canals, be mindful to wear footwear.
  • If you are paddling on coastal waters, do not go out with offshore wind & do not paddle any further away than you can swim back to shore.
  • Be aware that cold water shock syndrome can occur in temperatures of 15 degrees or less. Although the water may look inviting, especially on a hot day, be mindful that UK inland waterways rarely exceed 20 degrees.
  • Always check the weather conditions ahead of your paddle, especially wind strength. and the location/route. IF IN DOUBT, DON’T GO OUT!

These are just some of the things you should be considering.
